Choosing a Default Safe

Upon starting SafeFile, you can specify a default Safe that SafeFile will open automatically. To choose a default Safe, check the Open default Safe when SafeFile is started button. Then click the Choose Safe button to choose the default Safe.

Choosing Default View

You can configure what information is displayed by adjusting the Default Safe View. The following attributes of a Safe's view can be changed:

Setting Drag and Drop Behavior

When dragging and dropping items either from the Finder to the Safe (Encrypting items) or from the Safe to the Finder (Decrypting items) you can choose one of two options. The two options are:

Setting Double-Click Behavior

When doing repetitive Decryptings and opening of files, you can define the double-click behavior. You can choose one of the three following options:

If you choose either the second or the third option, you will need to indicate the folder where the items will be Decrypted. Also, you can specify if the decrypted files are deleted from the safe.

Note: SafeFile will not automatically Encrypt items or return items to the Safe. It is the user's responsibility to place items back into a Safe when the user is finished working on the Decrypted item.

Setting Delete Behavior

When you wish to permanently delete an item from a Safe, you can choose to have the items Shredded or simply deleted. While choosing to have items simply deleted from the Safe is quicker, the more secure method of deleting an item is by shredding it.

Choosing Feedback Sounds

You can choose to have SafeFile play a sound when Encrypting, Decrypting, or deleting items. Simply check which event you would like a sound to play, and choose a sound by clicking the Choose Sound... button.

Turning Off Warnings

SafeFile will warn you before overwriting items when Encrypting and Decrypting and also when deleting items. You can turn off these warnings by unchecking the buttons.

Changing Shredding Preferences

SafeFile allows you to change the shredding pattern and the shredding level when shredding is used when deleting items. You have the option to choose either the SafeFile Default, DoD 5220.22 M, All 0s, All 1s or the Random shredding pattern. Also, you may change the shredding level by adjusting the Shredding Level slider.

Changing the Default Cipher

When new Safes are created, the encryption cipher used is the default Encryption cipher shown in the list of available ciphers. Note: Changing the default cipher will not change the cipher used in existing Safes. To "convert" an existing Safe to a different cipher, you must Decrypt all items in that Safe, create a new Safe, and Encrypt all items in the new Safe.
