After a Safe has been opened, files and documents may be secured by being placed inside a Safe. This operation of placing items within the Safe is called Encrypting. There are three methods of placing files or documents inside the Safe.

The first method is by dragging the desired files and folders from the Finder and dropping them at the desired destination within the Safe.



The second method is using either the Encrypt Items... menu item under the Safe menu or by using the Encrypt Items... menu item under the context menu of the Safe. After choosing either of the menu items, SafeFile will prompt you to choose the files and folders you wish to Encrypt.

  

The third method of Encrypting items is to use the Mac OS pasteboard. Simply select the files and folders you wish to Encrypt in the Finder, then hit Command-C to copy the items and hit Command-P to paste the items within the Safe.

Taking items out of a Safe, or Decrypting, is exactly the reverse of Encrypting items. Any of the same three methods can be followed: drag and drop from the Safe to the Finder, using either the Decrypt Items... menu item under the Safe menu or the Safe's context menu, or by copying and pasting items from the Safe to the Finder.

You can Encrypt items in the Safe and then Decrypt them to a location outside the Safe and then use the correct application to open them.

SafeFile allows you to combine the decryption, choosing of decryption location, and opening of files and folder into one convenient step. To open files, you may either double-click on items you wish to open or you may select the item you wish to open and Control-click and choose the Open menu item.

To permanently delete any item that you wish to delete, you must Shred them. There are two ways to permanently remove an item from the Safe. The first method is to select the item or items within the Safe that you wish to delete and then hit the del or delete key. The second method is choose the Delete Items from the Safe menu or Delete from the context menu.

To create new folders within an open Safe, select either the New Folder menu item under the Safe menu or under the Safe's Context menu. Alternatively, you may drag an empty folder from the Finder into the Safe.

  

To rename an item, select the item you wish to rename and either select the Rename Item under the Safe menu or the Rename menu item under the Safe's context menu.
