Opening Safes

To get started using SafeFile, one or more Safes must be created and then opened before files and documents can be securely stored. If you completed the SafeFile setup steps presented to you when you first ran SafeFile, you will have created your first Safe which may or may not be the default Safe SafeFile opens on startup.

If you did not specify a default Safe, you must open a Safe after starting SafeFile. There are three methods of opening a Safe.

First, you can open an existing Safe by choosing the Open Safe... menu item in the File menu or in the Dock menu for SafeFile.

Then, you need to choose which Safe to open and provide the correct password for that Safe.

The second method is to double-click on an existing Safe in the Finder. This will launch SafeFile and ask you for the password for the Safe to be opened.

The third method is to select a recently opened Safe in the Open Recent Safes... submenu found under the File menu or the Dock menu for SafeFile.

Closing Safes

To close a Safe, you may click the red close button on the window as you normally would close any window or you may choose the Close Safe menu item under the File menu.

Creating New Safes

Having more then one Safe is useful for any number of reasons. To create a new Safe, choose the New Safe... menu item under the File menu item or in the Dock menu for SafeFile.

SafeFile will prompt you to specify the location of the Safe and then the password of the Safe. We recommend that you choose different password for each Safe that you create. We also recommend that you choose passwords that are not easy for other users to guess. If you lose or forget your password, you will not be able to open the Safe and access any files or documents.

Changing a Safe's Password

We recommend that you change your password from time to time or anytime you believe your password has been compromised. To change your password, select the Change Password... menu item under the Safe menu.

To change the password you need to enter the Safe's current password and the new password twice. After successfully changing the Safe's password, you must use the new password whenever opening the Safe.

Obtaining Safe Information

To obtain information about a Safe, which includes the creation date, modification date, disk space used, and the encryption cipher used, choose the Get Safe Info menu item under the Safe menu.
