You can set the shredding level which determines the degree to which SafeShred shreds the files. To set the shredding level, open the Preferences window by choosing Preferences under the SafeShred menu.
SafeShred has 20 levels of shredding. At the minimum shredding level, files are overwritten one time with a the selected bit pattern. The minimum shredding level offers the least amount of security against recovery of the shredded data. At the maximum shredding level, data is overwritten 20 times with a selected bit pattern. The maximum shredding level offers the highest amount of security against recovery of the shredded data. Please note, the higher the shredding level, the longer shredding process takes.
Most users find that setting the shredding level lower for day-to-day shredding needs and increasing the shredding level for shredding sensitive data a good compromise.
