You can set the shredding pattern which determines the bit pattern SafeShred uses when shredding files. To set the shredding pattern, open the Preferences window by choosing Preferences under the SafeShred menu.

SafeShred has five different bit patterns.
- SafeShred Default: This bit pattern shreds the file's data with a 1010... pattern then a 0101... pattern for each overwrite-pass (the Shredding Level).
- DoD 5220.22 M: This bit pattern overwrites the file's data with a character, its complement, and then a random character. While this bit pattern is the strongest of the three bit patterns, it will take approximately 33% more time to shred a file compared with the other two patterns.
- Random: This bit pattern overwrites the file's data with random characters twice for each overwrite.
- All O's: This bit pattern overwrites the file's data with a 0000... pattern.
- All 1's: This bit pattern overwrites the file's data with a 1111... pattern.
